Ammonites are the fossilized remains of squid-like animals which existed from 420 million years ago till the mass extinction at the end of the Cretaceous period, 65 million years ago. The effect of light passing through the various layers of aragonite and conchiolin mineralization results in the intense reds, yellow orange green color flashes of Opal-like fire.
