FLUORAPATITE w/ QUARTZ: Panasqueira Mines, Covilhã, Castelo Branco, Portugal. Dimensions: 4.4 x 3.2 x 2.9 cm, miniature. This is a very fine cluster of glassy Fluorapatite crystals from the world famous Panasqueira tungsten-tin deposit in Portugal which has arguably produced the finest specimens of this species. This lovely group consists of a trio of tabular to prismatic, transparent to translucent green, hexagonal crystals that are distinctly zoned at their interior. The zoning of the two larger crystals is apparent even with little backlighting. The largest crystal, that measures 2.7 cm across, has a subtle mossy green core that is largely transparent, surrounded by 3 mm, very gemmy, sea-green rim. The next largest crystal at 2.6 cm, has a distinct medium green core followed by a 4 mm thick lighter green rim. There is even a 1.5 mm thick phantom within this outer rim! The smaller crystal on this aesthetic cluster is a sharp, 1.2 cm, barrel-shaped, hexagonal crystal that is super lustrous and gemmy exhibiting a darker green core with a nice hexagonal outline followed by a 2.5 mm thick, lighter green rim. All of the crystals show subtle, thin pyramidal faces around each broad, flat face. The Fluorapatites are complemented by a small patch of coarse, drusy white Quartz in one area. It is contacted in one area where it was attached to other Fluorapatites in the pocket. The Fluorapatite fluoresces orange-yellow in UV light. This is an attractive and well-composed piece!
